Cameron Jones Claims Unbound Gravel victory, Earns ‌Grand Prix Berth

Updated June 01, 2025

Cameron Jones‍ of Scott-Shimano conquered the‍ Unbound ⁣Gravel 200, sprinting to victory and securing a coveted spot in the Life Time Grand Prix. The ⁢24-year-old⁤ cyclist’s daring‍ strategy ‌paid off after 202 miles of grueling Kansas gravel.

Jones outpaced Simon Pellaud⁤ (Tudor) on the final ascent ⁢into Emporia, claiming his first Unbound 200 title. This win ⁢guarantees him one of the four available men’s wildcard positions in the ⁢Grand Prix series.

Having applied for the 2025 grand⁣ Prix earlier this year‍ without initial selection, Jones recognized Unbound as his ⁢prime chance. Wildcard recipients were determined ⁢based ‍on performances in the first two⁢ series races: Unbound and Sea ‍Otter Gravel, where Jones finished 12th but third among wildcard contenders.

“This whole wildcard thing, it’s kind of in my best interest to play it safe—like, it’s not just the⁣ race I ⁢can lose, it’s the chance to be in the Grand Prix,” Jones said. “But every time I sit‌ down, I’m like, ‘Who am I kidding?’⁢ I always go out and race like I’ve got nothing to lose. And yeah,it worked out this time.”

Jones’s ‍aggressive‌ approach was evident early on.‍ He⁢ launched his attack around mile 150,bridging to an initial breakaway before forging ahead with Pellaud. The duo established a lead of over seven ⁣minutes, battling Kansas headwinds.

“Bridging across the breakaway, you get a sense of ⁢risk ⁤there, and that definitely gives you a ⁣few extra watts,” he said.

the‌ race presented challenges.Jones cited the stretch after the⁣ Alma ⁣aid station, with approximately 30 miles remaining, as notably difficult due to a relentless headwind. “That was⁢ definitely⁤ the hardest moment, digging deep into the headwind,” Jones⁣ stated. “But once we turned the corner, we had a cross or tailwind all the way home,⁢ and the ⁢splits going up gave us extra morale.”

Jones ⁤attributed his victory to both his physical condition⁣ and meticulous planning. Improved hydration,a problem in the‍ previous year’s Unbound, was a key focus. He and his team, including ⁣his parents in the feed zones, were well-prepared.

“Last year, my undoing was those feed zones and‍ not taking enough water.this time,⁣ I brought way more than I needed and ate it all anyway,” he said, noting he took ‌on‍ nearly five and a half⁤ liters of water and multiple‌ ice socks to stay cool.‍ “If the only thing that whent wrong today‍ was not doing up my first hydration bottle properly, that’s a pretty lucky day out.”

Jones also praised ⁢his ⁤equipment choices, deeming‍ his setup “perfect” for the Flint Hills terrain. The Unbound Gravel win solidifies Jones’s position among the top contenders and secures‍ his place in the Grand Prix season.

“Guess it’s ‍time for Leadville ⁢now,” jones‍ said, looking ahead to the next challenge.

What’s next

With his Unbound Gravel victory, Cameron Jones transitions from wildcard entrant to a serious ⁤contender in the upcoming Leadville race ⁣and the remainder of the Grand Prix series. His ⁤performance has marked‌ him as one to watch in the ⁢world of gravel racing.
