Cameron Smith’s Struggles at Australian Open: A Disappointing Finish
Cameron Smith began his Australian Open performance with strong enthusiasm but struggled to maintain his momentum. Before the tournament, he criticized officials for the condition of the courses, suggesting they were too easy for the dual-gender event.
Smith started with an impressive round, scoring six under par and following it with an eagle and a birdie. Initially, it seemed like he could lead throughout the tournament. However, his performance declined significantly on the back nine of the second round. He felt pressured after being timed, blaming slow play from a fellow competitor for his difficulties.
Smith clearly expressed his desire to win, considering the Australian Open second only to the Masters. His first 24 holes showed promise with 11 birdies and an eagle. However, the next 24 holes were disappointing, with no birdies, seven bogeys, and a double bogey.
From a strong position early in the second round, he fell from second place to 48th. He managed to score a birdie on the third round but finished with a four-over 76, putting him 12 shots behind the leader.
Smith is competing in four consecutive events, a change from his typical routine. His friend and fellow golfer, Marc Leishman, acknowledged the challenge of winning but emphasized the high skill level of all players in the tournament. Leishman noted that winning is challenging, and Smith’s strong desire to win can make it even tougher.
