James Cameron Still Pursuing “Fantastic Voyage” Remake

James Cameron has a history of shepherding ambitious projects like “Battle Angel Alita” and “Avatar” to fruition after years of development. “Fantastic Voyage” is another long-held passion project for the director.
Cameron has been attached as a producer to a remake of the 1966 science fiction film “Fantastic Voyage,” starring Raquel Welch, as the late 1990s. Several directors, including Guillermo del Toro, Paul Greengrass, roland Emmerich, and Shawn Levy, have been considered for the project at various times.
A previous attempt at a remake, involving Cameron and del Toro, with a script by “Batman Begins” writer David S. Goyer, was reportedly halted by 20th Century Fox, as Syfy wire reported in 2018.
In a recent interview with Deadline on April 24, 2024, Cameron provided an update on the project:
“I’ve been nurturing that for a while. I hope to get that going this coming year. I’ll be producing it. I’m working with a director right now with a new script. So, yeah, we’re gonna do it.”
the original “Fantastic Voyage” (1966) centers on a team of specialists shrunk to microscopic size and injected into the body of a scientist to repair a life-threatening blood clot. The scientist holds the secret to miniaturization technology but falls into a coma.
Richard fleischer directed the original film, which also featured Stephen Boyd, Edmond O’Brien, Donald pleasence, and Arthur Kennedy.
