Cameroon 1986: The Invisible and Odorless Death
On Aug. 21, 1986, a silent, invisible natural disaster struck the volcanic crater lakes of Cameroon, releasing a massive cloud of carbon dioxide that killed more than 1,700 people and thousands of livestock in a matter of minutes. According to historical accounts and geological documentation, the catastrophic event at Lake Nyos caught nearby rural communities completely unawares as lethal gas flowed down neighboring valleys.
The Mechanism of a Limnic Eruption
The disaster was caused by a rare natural phenomenon known as a limnic eruption, or lake overturn. According to geological studies of the event, Lake Nyos sits atop a volcanic pocket that continuously leaks carbon dioxide into the water, supersaturating the deep layers over decades.
On that August night, an unknown trigger—likely a minor landslide, heavy rain, or cooling surface water—upset the fragile stratification of the lake. This disturbance caused the deep, gas-rich waters to rapidly rise to the surface, where the sudden drop in pressure forced dissolved carbon dioxide out of solution on a massive scale.
The Immediate Toll on Local Villages

Because carbon dioxide is heavier than air, the dense gas cloud hugged the ground as it poured out of the crater and spilled over the rim. Villages such as Nyos, Subum, and Cha lay directly in the path of the descending plume.
According to survivor accounts and rescue reports compiled after the disaster, victims died swiftly and without warning as the gas displaced breathable oxygen. Many people collapsed where they stood, while livestock and wildlife across a 25-kilometer radius also perished.
Modern Monitoring and Prevention Efforts
In the years following the disaster, international scientific teams and Cameroonian authorities worked to neutralize the threat of a repeat eruption at Lake Nyos and neighboring Lake Monoun, which experienced a similar lethal degassing event in 1984. Engineers installed degassing pipes in 2001 that continuously siphon carbon dioxide safely from the deep water layers into the atmosphere.
According to ongoing geological assessments, these siphon systems have significantly reduced gas pressure in the crater lakes, though local communities continue to live with the legacy of the 1986 catastrophe.
