Salvage Operation Underway for Burning Gas Tanker Near Yemen
A salvage team is en route to the MV Falcon, a gas tanker that has been adrift and ablaze approximately 115 nautical miles off the coast of Aden, Yemen, since Saturday, October 19, 2025. The situation poses a important environmental and navigational hazard in a critical shipping lane.
Explosion and Evacuation
An explosion rocked the MV Falcon, which sails under the flag of Cameroon, on Saturday. Following the blast, nearby vessels successfully evacuated 24 of the 26 crew members. The Joint Maritime Details Centre (JMIC) has reported that the remaining two individuals are presumed deceased.
Cause of Explosion Under Examination
initial speculation suggested the explosion may have been caused by an external projectile, but the JMIC now believes the incident was not the result of an external attack. Houthi rebels in yemen, who operate in the region, have denied any involvement in the incident on Saturday,October 19,2025.
Significant Cargo and Ongoing Fire
The MV Falcon was reportedly fully laden with liquefied gas when the explosion occurred. The vessel continues to drift without propulsion and remains on fire, increasing the risk of a catastrophic event. The lack of maneuverability complicates salvage efforts and heightens concerns about potential escalation.
The situation is being closely monitored by maritime security forces, and the arrival of the salvage team represents a crucial step towards mitigating the risks associated with the stricken tanker.
