Unusual nighttime behavior could be a sign of a serious problem that should not be underestimated. If you notice such behavior, consulting a neurologist or a sleep disorder specialist is the best course of action to thoroughly investigate your health.

This behavior might be an early indicator of a disease. Therefore, a more in-depth investigation is necessary to identify the issue and intervene promptly. The importance of paying attention to what happens during sleep is highlighted by a study published in Annals of Neurology. Here’s what the scientists discovered.
Attention to Sleep Behavior
According to researchers, agitated movements during sleep, especially in the REM phase, could indicate a higher risk of developing dementia or Parkinson’s disease. In essence, there appears to be a connection between restless sleep and the advancement of neurodegenerative diseases. This conclusion comes from a study that analyzed the behavior of 170 patients.
The patients’ sleep was monitored using 2D cameras. Just under half of the subjects (80) suffered from some form of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), while the others had no apparent problems. Using an artificial intelligence algorithm, the researchers calculated – with 92% accuracy – the frequency, intensity, and speed of nighttime movements.
These REM sleep behavior disorders – also known as RBD – occur when the body does not remain paralyzed during the REM sleep phase. Individuals then act out their dreams, moving suddenly, with violent gestures, or even shouting. Some patients report unintentionally hitting their partners during sleep.
Others report waking up tired due to nighttime agitation. It has long been hypothesized that RBD is linked to inflammation in certain areas of the brain, particularly the areas involved in the production of dopamine, the central neurotransmitter for motor control. This could explain the connection with Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s disease is characterized by the progressive degeneration of cells that produce dopamine. RBD is often underestimated or confused with other sleep disorders. It is indeed estimated that up to 5% of the population may suffer from it, even though many are unaware untill it begins to cause critically important problems.
The ability to identify Parkinson’s disease or dementia through sleep analysis could represent a new and important tool for early diagnosis. essentially, by analyzing patients’ sleep, doctors would have a simpler and more effective screening method available.
REM Sleep behavior Disorder and Parkinson’s disease
REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a condition where individuals act out their dreams during the REM (rapid eye movement) sleep phase. Normally, during REM sleep, our bodies are temporarily paralyzed. However, in people with RBD, this paralysis doesn’t occur, leading to possibly perilous movements.
The link between RBD and Parkinson’s disease is significant. Research indicates that a substantial percentage of individuals with Parkinson’s disease also experience RBD. According to one study, REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is reported in “up to 50% of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD).”
Moreover, RBD can sometimes precede the onset of Parkinson’s disease by several years, making it a potential early marker for the condition. While “plenty of people with sleep disorders never develop PD,” the correlation between RBD and PD is well-established.
The Importance of Recognizing RBD
Recognizing and diagnosing RBD is crucial for several reasons:
- Early Detection: It can serve as an early warning sign for parkinson’s disease.
- Improved Management: Proper diagnosis allows for timely intervention and management of both RBD and potential underlying conditions.
- Safety: Addressing RBD can prevent injuries to both the individual and their bed partner.
If you or someone you know experiences symptoms of RBD, such as acting out dreams, consult a healthcare professional for evaluation and guidance.
