The findings stem from two large population studies conducted in the United Kingdom and Australia. These studies indicate that individuals who perform poorly on simple vision tests face a higher risk of developing dementia more than a decade later.
Specific Visual Indicators of Risk
The two studies focused on different aspects of visual function to determine their predictive value for cognitive health.
A study published in 2024 in the United Kingdom focused on visual processing speeds. The researchers found that participants with slower processing speeds were more likely to develop dementia over the subsequent 12 years.
Parallel research from Australia examined visual acuity. This study concluded that deteriorating visual acuity was a significant predictor of cognitive decline over a similar 12-year timeframe.
Public Health Context and Risk Factors
The connection between sensory loss and brain health has gained further recognition from major medical bodies. In 2024, The Lancet’s latest Commission on dementia identified vision loss in late life as a new risk factor for cognitive decline.

According to the commission, vision loss in late life contributes to up to 2.2 percent of dementia cases. For comparison, untreated hearing loss during mid-life is estimated to contribute to approximately seven percent of cases.
The Role of Early Intervention
Experts emphasize that vision decline is not always an inevitable precursor to dementia, as many causes of vision loss are treatable.

Vision and hearing loss can be indicative of various underlying health problems. The presence of these sensory issues does not mean an older individual is certain to develop dementia.
