Dr. David Mannino is currently the Chief Medical officer at the COPD Foundation, bringing decades of experience to the forefront of respiratory health. His career has been marked by significant contributions to understanding and addressing the burden of lung diseases in the United States.
Early Work at the Centers for Disease control and Prevention
Following his medical training as a pulmonary specialist, Dr. Mannino joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Air Pollution and Respiratory Health Branch. During his tenure at the CDC, he played a key role in developing the National Asthma Program and spearheaded the creation of crucial Surveillance Reports detailing the national impact of asthma in 1998 and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in 2002.
Academic Leadership at the University of Kentucky
After retiring from the CDC in 2004, Dr. Mannino transitioned to the University of Kentucky, where he balanced clinical work in the College of Medicine with teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities within the College of Public Health.He served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health from 2012 to 2017, holding a concurrent appointment in the Department of Epidemiology.
Founding Role with the COPD Foundation
Dr. Mannino was instrumental in launching the COPD Foundation in 2004, initially serving as a board member. He later took on leadership roles as Chairman of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee from 2010 to 2015 and as Chief Scientific officer from 2015 to 2017.
Prolific Researcher and Editorial Contributor
Dr. Mannino is a highly published researcher, with over 350 publications to his name. He actively contributes to the advancement of respiratory medicine as an associate editor or editorial board member for leading journals including the american Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Chest,Thorax, European Respiratory Journal,and the Journal of the COPD Foundation.
His expertise has been recognized nationally, as evidenced by his co-authorship of the Surgeon General’s Reports on Tobacco in both 2008 and 2014.
