Twenty-five countries have issued a joint statement calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and condemning actions that hinder humanitarian aid, urging Canada to move beyond the sidelines of international justice.
A Call for Action on the Global Stage
In a significant diplomatic move, twenty-five countries have united to demand an end to the escalating conflict in Gaza, urging all parties to prioritize peace and security for Israelis, Palestinians, and the wider region. The joint statement, which implicitly calls for greater engagement from nations like Canada, emphasizes that “further bloodshed serves no purpose” and reiterates support for ongoing mediation efforts by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt.
the signatories have declared their readiness to “take further action to support an immediate ceasefire and a political pathway to security and peace.” This collective stance highlights a growing international consensus on the urgent need for de-escalation and a commitment to a lasting resolution.
Humanitarian Crisis and International Law
The foreign ministers expressed deep concern over the “horrifying” reality of over 800 Palestinians killed while seeking aid, labeling the Israeli government’s denial of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza as “unacceptable.” This criticism comes amidst warnings from UN agencies and humanitarian organizations about the dire risk of famine in Gaza, with particular scrutiny placed on israel’s aid delivery mechanisms.
Despite Israel’s backing of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an American contractor tasked with aid distribution, UN figures indicate that hundreds of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers since the foundation’s operations began in May.
The statement also addressed the plight of hostages held by Hamas as October 7, 2023, condemning their continued detention and calling for their immediate release. Ministers believe a ceasefire offers the best opportunity to reunite the hostages with their families and end their prolonged suffering.
The twenty-five nations have implored Israel to immediately lift restrictions on aid entering Gaza and to “urgently enable” the UN and humanitarian NGOs to carry out their life-saving work.
Upholding International Law and Rejecting Forced Displacement
A core tenet of the joint statement is the call for all parties to protect civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law. The ministers unequivocally rejected any proposals for the forced removal of the Palestinian population into a “humanitarian city,” deeming permanent forced displacement a violation of international law.
Moreover, the countries expressed opposition to any actions that could lead to territorial or demographic changes in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The E1 settlement plan, announced by Israel’s Civil Management, was specifically cited as a “flagrant breach of international law” that would divide a future Palestinian state and critically undermine the two-state solution. The statement also noted the acceleration of settlement building across the west Bank and East Jerusalem, coupled with a surge in settler violence against Palestinians, demanding that these actions cease.
In response,Israel’s foreign ministry rejected the joint statement via X,describing it as “disconnected from reality and sends the wrong message to Hamas.” This reaction underscores the deep divisions and ongoing diplomatic challenges in resolving the conflict.
