Canada Advocates Reforms at Kimberley Process Amid Russia’s Obstruction on Conflict Diamonds
Canada‘s Involvement in the Kimberley Process on Conflict Diamonds
On November 12 to 15, 2024, Canada attended the 21st Plenary Meeting of the Kimberley Process in Dubai. This process aims to stop the trade of conflict diamonds, which fund violence and wars. Canada is a founding member and values the mission to connect diamonds with peace instead of conflict.
For the third consecutive year, Russia blocked discussions about how its diamond sales support its invasion of Ukraine. Canada supports Ukraine’s request for the Kimberley Process to investigate this issue. The lack of action highlights the need for reform, including updating the definition of conflict diamonds to meet current realities. Canada, as a top diamond producer, is committed to advocating for these changes.
Additionally, Canada played a role in lifting diamond export restrictions in the Central African Republic (CAR). This change will help CAR citizens benefit from their diamond resources while maintaining compliance with Kimberley Process standards.
Canada remains dedicated to making diamonds a source of hope and stability, ensuring their trade does not fund conflict.
