Canada Beckons: 6,000 Cameroonians Make the Move in Just Four Months
Massive Exodus of Cameroonians to Canada: A Growing Concern
Between January and April 2024, 6,000 Cameroonians Choose Canada
Cameroon is facing a significant brain drain as thousands of its citizens are immigrating to Canada in search of better opportunities. According to recent figures, between January and April 2024, almost 6,000 Cameroonians have made the move to this North American country.
Célestin Tawamba, president of the Groupement des Entreprises du Cameroun (Gecam), expressed deep concern about the massive exodus of Cameroonians abroad, especially to Canada. “Cameroon is the second country in the world to provide labor to Canada, just behind France,” he noted.
The financial expert turned successful industrialist highlighted that these population movements, often carried out without the knowledge of employers, leave a worrying void in companies, sometimes making it difficult to fill vacancies.
The Consequences of Brain Drain
The consequences of this brain drain are manifold. Companies not only face a lack of qualified personnel, but also have to deal with the debts of employees who have left the country. “These employees who resign leave unpaid loans from financial institutions, which complicate access to credit for other employees of the same company,” lamented the president of Gecam.
Economic Challenges and the Search for a Better Life
The difficult economic situation in Cameroon is often cited as one of the main reasons that push professionals and unskilled workers to look for better opportunities abroad. The search for a better life becomes a necessity in the face of the socio-economic challenges facing the country.
Statistics on Cameroonian Immigration
According to the American Community Survey, between 2015 and 2019, approximately 60,100 Cameroonians immigrated to the United States. Since the start of the Anglophone crisis in 2017, the exodus has grown. In 2022, more than 90,000 Cameroonians left for France, followed by 15,769 for Belgium and 12,000 for Spain.
