Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia – A shooting in the remote mountain town of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, has left ten people dead, including the suspected shooter, in what authorities are calling one of Canada’s deadliest mass casualty events in recent history. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), six people were found deceased inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Two more were discovered dead at a residence believed to be connected to the incident, and a further individual died en route to hospital. At least two others were hospitalized with serious or life-threatening injuries, while approximately 25 people are being treated for non-life-threatening wounds.
The suspected shooter was also found dead, apparently from a self-inflicted injury. Authorities have stated they do not believe there are any further suspects and that the public is no longer at risk. Superintendent Ken Floyd confirmed at a press conference that the suspect described in an earlier active shooter alert – a “female in a dress with brown hair” – was the same individual found deceased at the school.
The RCMP has released limited information regarding the shooter, noting only that the individual was described as female. This detail is potentially significant, as mass shootings in North America have historically been overwhelmingly carried out by men.
British Columbia Premier David Eby expressed shock and dismay, stating, “It’s hard to know what to say on a night like tonight. It’s the kind of thing that feels like it happens in other places and not close to home.”
Tumbler Ridge, a municipality of around 2,400 people nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains approximately 1,155km north-east of Vancouver, is a tight-knit community. Tumbler Ridge Secondary School serves students in grades seven through twelve, with a student body of roughly 160.
The school has been closed for the remainder of the week, and counselling services are being made available to students, staff, and the wider community. Officials noted that the town’s small police detachment responded to the initial call within two minutes, a response credited with potentially saving lives. Nina Krieger, British Columbia’s Public Safety Minister, highlighted this swift response, stating, “What we have is a small, tight-knit community with a small RCMP detachment as well, who responded in two minutes, no doubt saving lives today.”
The shooting ranks among the deadliest in Canadian history. The most recent comparable tragedy occurred in April 2020 in Nova Scotia, where a gunman disguised as a police officer killed 22 people during a 13-hour rampage before being fatally shot by police. Canada’s worst school shooting took place in December 1989 at the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec, where a gunman killed 14 female students and wounded 13 before taking his own life.
Canada has stricter gun control laws than the United States, requiring licensing for firearm ownership. However, the current regulations have faced scrutiny and calls for further tightening, particularly in the wake of previous mass shootings. The Trudeau government introduced restrictions on handgun ownership and assault-style weapons in 2020, partly in response to the Nova Scotia shooting and the Uvalde school shooting in Texas. Attempts to ban certain types of rifles and shotguns were later abandoned following opposition from farmers and hunters.
The incident has prompted a swift response from the Canadian government. Prime Minister Mark Carney postponed a planned announcement in Halifax on regarding a new Defence Industrial Strategy, as well as a subsequent trip to Germany for the Munich Security Conference. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Carney expressed his devastation, stating, “I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence.”
