Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia – A remote community in western Canada is reeling after a series of shootings on February 10, 2026, left nine people dead and at least 27 injured. The attacks unfolded at both a private residence and Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, marking what authorities are calling one of the deadliest school shootings in Canadian history.

The first reports came in at approximately 1:20 p.m. MST, alerting the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to an active shooter at the school. Police responded swiftly, with British Columbia’s Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Nina Krieger stating officers arrived “within two minutes” of receiving the call.

According to RCMP updates, six individuals were found deceased inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Two more victims were discovered at a private home within the town, which has a population of roughly 2,400. A seventh person died while being transported to hospital for medical attention. The alleged shooter was also found dead at the school, having succumbed to a self-inflicted injury. Police have not yet released the identity of the perpetrator, and a motive remains under investigation.

Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, operated by School District 59 Peace River South, serves students in grades 7 through 12, with a listed enrollment of 175. The school is the designated secondary institution for the town’s primary school population. The shootings have prompted an outpouring of grief and shock from local residents, with Tumbler Ridge councillor Chris Norbury describing the community as “an incredibly safe community… we don’t have to worry about crime here.”

The scale of the tragedy has prompted a national response. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed his condolences, stating that “the nation mourns with you.” Governor General of Canada Mary Simon also issued a statement, expressing devastation and extending gratitude to first responders.

The incident has reignited the debate surrounding gun control in Canada. While Canada has stricter gun laws than the United States, the passage of the Firearms Act in 1995, following the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal, did not prevent this latest tragedy. Further legislation restricting firearms distinct from hunting was passed in British Columbia in 1996, but the effectiveness of these measures is now under renewed scrutiny.

The Peace River South School District has established support services for students, staff, and families affected by the shooting, acknowledging the event as “tragic and deeply traumatic.” The community is grappling with the aftermath of the violence, and the long-term impact on Tumbler Ridge remains uncertain.

The RCMP investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to piece together the events leading up to the shootings and to determine the perpetrator’s motive. The investigation is expected to be complex, given the multiple locations involved and the number of victims.

This incident marks a significant escalation in gun violence in Canada, a country where mass shootings are comparatively rare. The remote location of Tumbler Ridge, and the close-knit nature of the community, amplify the sense of loss and shock felt across the nation. The tragedy raises difficult questions about the vulnerability of even the most seemingly secure communities to acts of violence and the ongoing need to address the root causes of such events.

As of Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the area remains under heightened security, and counselling services are being made available to residents. The focus now shifts to supporting the victims, their families, and the wider community as they begin the long process of healing.
