Canadian Crude Oil Now Duty-Free Following FTA Resolution

South Korean customs authorities have announced that imports of Canadian crude oil can now enter the country duty-free, resolving a long-standing obstacle to the application of the Korea-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The development follows the successful resolution of issues related to proving the origin of Canadian crude oil, which had previously hindered the preferential tariff treatment under the FTA between South Korea and Canada.

According to the Korea Customs Service, the breakthrough was achieved through simplified procedures for origin certification, allowing Canadian crude oil to qualify for duty-free treatment under the agreement.

The announcement was made on April 21, 2026 and reported by Asian Economic News, citing an official statement from the Korea Customs Service.

This change means that Canadian crude oil imports into South Korea will no longer be subject to customs duties, provided they meet the origin rules established under the Korea-Canada FTA.

The resolution addresses a key barrier that had limited the effectiveness of the trade agreement in the energy sector, particularly for crude oil shipments from Alberta, Canada’s primary oil-producing province.
