Tsunoda Faces Grid Penalty at Canadian Grand ‌Prix

Updated June 15, 2025

Montreal—Yuki‍ Tsunoda will‌ receive‌ a⁤ 10-place ‌grid penalty at the Canadian Grand prix after race stewards ‌ruled he improperly overtook Oscar⁣ Piastri during a practice session halted by a red flag. The incident occurred⁣ after Piastri, the ⁤current points leader, clipped the notorious “Wall⁤ of Champions,” resulting in‌ a puncture ⁤and suspension⁢ damage to his McLaren.

The session was immediately suspended due to debris from Piastri’s ⁢car. Regulations prohibit overtaking under red flag conditions, which mandate drivers return to the pits.

Tsunoda, driving for Red Bull, passed‌ the ⁤significantly slower McLaren on the‍ backstraight leading to pit entry.Stewards noted Tsunoda‌ was traveling at 171 km/h, while Piastri’s damaged car was moving at ⁤86 km/h.

Tsunoda told stewards ⁢he overtook Piastri out of concern⁢ for ⁢potential debris strikes ⁢from‌ the damaged vehicle. Though, officials rejected this justification, asserting piastri’s car was not moving at a speed ‌that‌ prevented Tsunoda from maintaining a safe distance.

The stewards’⁢ report stated, ‌”While Car ⁤81⁣ had an obvious problem, it was not traveling at such a speed that it prevented Car 22 from following it at a safe ⁣distance. The circumstances were such that there was no justifiable⁢ reason‍ for the driver ‍of Car 22 to have overtaken Car 81.”

Since being promoted from Racing Bulls to⁣ Red Bull at the Japanese Grand prix ⁤in April, Tsunoda has struggled⁢ to find his form, scoring only 4 points.

What’s next

Tsunoda will aim ‍to minimize ⁢the impact ⁣of the penalty and secure valuable championship points in Sunday’s race, while Piastri‍ looks to rebound from the practice mishap.
