Updated June 16, ⁢2025

Eighteen-year-old Kimi Antonelli, a Mercedes rookie, celebrated his first Formula 1 podium finish with a third-place showing. Antonelli, at 18 years, 294 days, is now the third-youngest to ‍reach the podium, trailing only⁢ Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll.

Antonelli started fourth and quickly passed Oscar Piastri, the championship leader. He then withstood⁤ pressure from Piastri in‍ the race’s final laps to maintain his position and secure the podium finish. The ⁢young driver’s⁣ performance highlights the importance of a strong start and consistent driving under pressure in Formula 1.

“It was so stressful but super happy,” antonelli saeid. “the last stint I pushed a bit too hard behind Max and I killed⁣ a bit of the front left and I struggled a bit at the ⁤end, but I’m really happy to‌ bring the podium home.”

Mercedes attributed their strong⁢ showing at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve to the track’s smooth surface ⁣and low-speed corners, which complement the car’s design. George Russell noted ‌thes factors contributed to the team’s success in Montreal.

“This track has been good for us and the⁤ car has been incredible all weekend. Hopefully we can⁤ carry the same momentum into the next few races,” Antonelli ⁢added, expressing optimism about future races.

What’s next

Looking ahead, the Formula‌ 1 calendar moves to Austria from June ⁣27-29. Russell anticipates these‍ factors could pose difficulties for Mercedes. He cautioned against overstating ‌Mercedes’ resurgence, ‍emphasizing the⁤ need for continued improvement.
