British Number Two Falls to World Number 99 Vukic; Swiatek and Osaka Secure Wins
Cameron Norrie, Britain’s second-highest ranked male tennis player, has been eliminated from the canadian Open following a surprising second-round defeat to world number 99 Aleksandar Vukic. The 29-year-old Australian secured a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 victory over the British number two, marking a significant upset in the men’s singles draw.
Norrie, currently ranked 39th in the world after reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals in early July, has struggled to replicate his grass-court form on the hard courts. He last clinched a singles title in 2023, and his recent performances have raised questions about his current momentum. The match against Vukic saw Norrie quickly fall behind, trailing 3-0 in the opening set. Reports suggest Norrie may have been struggling with illness during the match, with his blood pressure being checked midway through the second set. Despite battling back to level the match,a failure to convert any of his three break points in a rain-interrupted deciding set ultimately proved costly against the unseeded Australian.

The Japanese star demonstrated remarkable resilience, saving break points in a crucial game in the second set before staging a comeback from a 5-2 deficit in the tie-break. This victory marks Osaka’s first win against a top-20 player as her Australian Open success against Karolina Muchova in January.
Osaka, who recently announced a split with coach Patrick Mouratoglou and is now working with Tomasz Wiktorowski, broke Samsonova twice in the deciding set to seal her place in the third round.
