Canadian ski jumper Abigail Strate achieved a career milestone on Sunday, securing her first international gold medal at a Summer Grand Prix event in Courchevel, France. The victory marks a significant moment for Canadian ski jumping and solidifies Strate’s position as a rising star in the sport.
A Golden Performance in Courchevel
Strate topped the field on the large HS135 hill, earning 108.8 points and finishing ahead of a competitive international lineup. The triumph followed a bronze medal performance on Saturday, demonstrating consistent excellence and building momentum for the 24-year-old Calgarian.
“it is a little upgrade from yesterday,” a visibly emotional Strate shared after the win. “I’m still kind of overwhelmed with everything going on. I’ve never heard the Canadian anthem played on the podium for myself,so I was bawling my eyes out. It was really good today. I’m so happy.”
Germany’s Selina Freitag claimed the silver medal with 108.3 points, while japan’s Nozomi Maruyama rounded out the podium with a bronze-winning score of 105.5.
Breaking Canadian Ground
Strate’s gold medal is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first victory for a Canadian ski jumper at Courchevel since Alexandra Pretorius’s win in 2012. This achievement underscores a resurgence in Canadian ski jumping and highlights the dedication and talent within the national program.
Fellow Canadians Alex Loutitt finished a respectable eighth, and Nicole Maurer, also hailing from Calgary, secured 17th place, contributing to a strong overall showing for the Canadian team.
Summer Ski Jumping: A Unique Discipline
For those unfamiliar, summer ski jumping offers a unique spectacle. Athletes compete on an in-run constructed with porcelain tracks, while the landing slope is covered with water-soaked plastic, allowing for year-round training and competition.
The competition format in Courchevel involved an initial round where athletes jumped in groups of five, with the top two from each group advancing to the second round. The top 20 competitors then started the final round with zero points, adding to the pressure and excitement.
Overcoming Past challenges
Strate’s journey to the top hasn’t been without its challenges. She openly acknowledged past near-misses, stating, “I’ve been close (to winning) a bunch of times, but I always seem to have found a way to mess it up.” However, she expressed immense satisfaction with her performance on Sunday, adding, “It was a great feeling today, knowing you are done your job for the day, and I couldn’t do anything better. It is amazing.”
