LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA, spain – The Canary Islands government is set to launch a free, universal service allowing primary care physicians to prescribe physical activity to patients. The ”Activide” program aims to improve public health by connecting patients with certified physical activity and sports professionals who will design and supervise personalized exercise programs.
Program Details and implementation
The initiative,a collaboration between the Ministry of Sports and Health,is slated to begin in the second half of the year with seven initial “Active Physical Exercise Units” (UAEF) across the archipelago – one on each island,according to Poli Suárez,Minister of Education,Professional Training,Physical Activity and Sports.
“With this presentation we take a new historical step towards a more active and healthy Canary Islands,” Suárez said during the program’s presentation. he emphasized the program’s strategic importance in prioritizing prevention and physical activity within public policy.
Antonia María Pérez, General Director of Assistance Programs of the Canary Health Service, highlighted the integration of health and physical activity. “The implementation of activated represents a basic advance in the integration of health and physical activity as well -being in our community,” Pérez said, adding that the program transforms primary care by emphasizing active and personalized prevention.

A key component of Activide is a digital platform, currently under advancement by the university of Granada. This platform, accessible via a mobile request, will connect to the Canarian Health Service’s information system, facilitating the prescription, referral, and monitoring process. The University of Granada previously developed a similar application for the Junta de andalucía, which served as a model for the canarian system.
The development of the digital tool is funded by the European Union’s Next Generation EU plan, reinforcing the program’s strategic nature and commitment to long-term sustainability.
Training and Progressive Rollout
To ensure consistent implementation, specific training will be provided to both sports and health professionals. The General Council of Official Colleges of Graduates in Physical Education and in Sciences of Physical Activity and Sports (Colef) will train sports professionals in July, while the School of Health and Social Services of the Canary Islands will train health professionals starting in June.
While pilot programs are planned for the summer, the first UAEFs are expected to launch across the Canary Islands in the second half of the year. These centers will be staffed by qualified professionals in physical activity and sports sciences who have received specific training on the Activide program.
