Dane became one of the advocates and fighters for research and treatment of this disease. He suffers from ALS, (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). It is a serious and incurable neurodegenerative disease.
It gradually destroys the neurons that send signals from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles. This leads to muscle weakness and paralysis. Patients gradually lose the ability to speak, swallow and eventually even breathe. People who suffer from it live only three to five years after diagnosis.

The fact that the disease has a rapidly progressing course is also evidenced by the latest reports, according to which the actor was seen at the airport in Toronto. He appeared very frail and moved around with the help of a wheelchair.
When asked what he would say to fans who believe all is well, Eric didn’t hesitate. “Don’t lose faith, man,” he was quoted as saying the Daily Mail.
According to sources close to the actor, the star is coming to terms with his own mortality. “He knows his destiny and is trying to figure out how to enjoy life, how to be a beacon of hope and help others who are going through hardships themselves. The actor, who shone especially in the series Klinika Grace or in Euphoria, has an interesting story behind him. They married model and actress Rebecca Gayheart (54) in 2004, less than a year after their first date.
Later, two little girls came into their lives – 15-year-old Billie and 13-year-old Georgia. But over time, their relations cooled. Apparently, the fact that Eric was struggling with an addiction to prescription drugs, which he got after one injury, also contributed to this. He was also troubled by depression.
Rebecca filed for divorce
Rebecca later decided to take the drastic step of filing for divorce. The year 2018 was written then, and the reason for it was insurmountable differences. “After 14 years together, we have decided that ending our marriage is the best solution for our family,” Dane told People magazine.
“We will continue our friendship and work as a team to take care of our two beautiful girls together because they are the most important thing in the world to us.”
However, as the years passed, the divorce itself never took place. Even in 2025, around the time Eric learned his diagnosis, it was announced that Rebecca was withdrawing her submission. Since then, they have been performing side by side again as husband and wife.
Gayheart pre portal E! News on the status of her relationship with Dan: “We’re best friends. We’re really close,” she said.
“We’ve been married for 15 years, still are, and we have two beautiful children, so I think that’s a successful relationship, and that’s how we look at it,” she said.
Daughters suffer because of it
However, she admitted that the news about her significant other’s poor health did not leave her cold. As she admitted, she and their two daughters are “taking it day by day”.

“I’m Eric, an actor, a father, and now a person living with ALS,” Dane said in a video on social media.
“For more than a century, ALS has been incurable, and we have stopped accepting the status quo. We need to find the fastest path to a cure, which is why I’ve teamed up with I Am ALS on the Push for Progress campaign. Our goal is a billion dollars over the next three years.”
“Together we will restore the groundbreaking Act for ALS, provide hopeful treatments to thousands of patients like me, and finally, finally, move toward ending this disease,” he continued, urging his followers to join the cause.
According to witnesses who saw him recently, he already has problems walking and was confined to a wheelchair. Even earlier, he also confessed to how he carries it all. “I wake up every day and it instantly reminds me that this is happening. It’s not a dream.”
