The field of oncology is poised for significant advancements as leading experts gather in Berlin from February 18 to February 21 for the 2026 German Cancer Congress (Deutscher Krebskongress – DKK). The congress, the largest and oldest of its kind in the German-speaking world, will serve as a crucial platform for sharing the latest research findings and fostering collaboration aimed at improving cancer treatment and outcomes.

The overarching goal of the DKK is ambitious: to enable patients to live longer, healthier lives with cancer, and, where possible, achieve complete remission. This year’s congress, led by President Prof. Dr. Anke Reinacher-Schick, Head of the Department of Hematology and Oncology with Palliative Care at St. Josef Hospital of the Catholic Hospital Bochum, University Hospital of the Ruhr University Bochum, and Chief of Oncology and Oncological Palliative Care at the DGD Lung Hospital Hemer, will focus on translating cutting-edge research into tangible benefits for patients.

The congress, organized by the Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft (German Cancer Society) and, for the seventh time, in collaboration with the Stiftung Deutsche Krebshilfe (German Cancer Aid), brings together a diverse range of experts in oncological patient care. This collaborative approach is intended to ensure a comprehensive and multifaceted discussion of the challenges and opportunities in cancer treatment.

A key component of the 2026 DKK will be the presentation of new research, with the Congress Presidium calling for abstracts in 43 categories. For the first time, the congress will also feature a dedicated submission channel for “The special case” – case studies offering unique insights into challenging clinical scenarios. The submission period for abstracts and case studies runs from May 7, 2025, to August 27, 2025, and will be conducted exclusively online.

While the specific details of the research to be presented remain under wraps until the congress, broader trends in cancer treatment suggest areas of significant progress. Recent advancements, as highlighted in research published in February 2025, demonstrate ongoing efforts to optimize gastrointestinal (GI) cancer care through improvements in molecular diagnostics, systemic therapies, and localized treatment approaches. A review of updates from the 2024 ASCO and ESMO Annual Meetings indicates continued progress in these areas, offering hope for improved patient outcomes.

Specifically, research presented at recent conferences has focused on refining perioperative management strategies for GI cancers and exploring the potential of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) – particularly in cases of microsatellite instability-high colorectal cancer. Localized treatments, such as thermal ablation for liver metastases in colorectal cancer patients, are also showing promise. These developments underscore the ongoing commitment of the medical and scientific community to improving GI cancer care.

Beyond GI cancers, the broader landscape of cancer treatment is undergoing a transformation with the emergence of novel therapies. These advancements offer new hope for patients facing challenging diagnoses. The German Cancer Congress provides a vital forum for disseminating these findings and discussing their implications for clinical practice.

The congress language is primarily German, reflecting its focus on the German-speaking oncology community. However, the insights shared at the DKK are expected to have a global impact, contributing to the collective effort to combat cancer worldwide. Registration for the congress opens on September 15, 2025.

The ongoing research and collaborative spirit fostered by events like the German Cancer Congress are essential for accelerating progress in the fight against cancer. By bringing together leading experts and showcasing the latest advancements, the DKK aims to translate scientific discoveries into improved outcomes and a brighter future for cancer patients.
