An outbreak of canine distemper virus has caused multiple deaths among stray dogs and left many others in critical condition within the Anantapur Municipal Corporation limits. The surge in cases has prompted animal welfare activists and local residents to call for immediate government intervention to stop the spread of the contagious disease.

According to reports from the Deccan Chronicle on April 4, 2026, the viral disease is affecting dogs across different areas of the city. In the Housing Board area, two of three dogs found with the virus have died, while a third remains in critical condition. Local volunteers and samaritans have been providing food and water to affected animals, and some have coordinated with private veterinary doctors to provide care.

Symptoms and Clinical Impact

The canine distemper virus manifests through a variety of severe symptoms. Sources indicate that affected stray dogs are exhibiting high fever, nasal discharge, lethargy, and difficulty in movement. In more advanced stages, the virus leads to nervous system failure, leaving animals unable to move and lying in various areas of the city.

The severity of the outbreak is reflected in the mortality rates at local facilities. Dr. Suresh, the assistant director of the Anantapur Veterinary Hospital, noted that at least 10 dogs have died at the hospital while undergoing treatment over the past few days.

Transmission and Risk Factors

Canine distemper is a highly infectious viral disease. Dr. Suresh explained that the virus spreads through direct contact between animals and via airborne exposure. The disease is particularly prevalent during the summer season and primarily targets dogs that have not been vaccinated.

The vulnerability of the local dog population is significant, as Anantapur has approximately 3,000 stray dogs. While some dogs that underwent birth control operations received vaccinations, a large portion of the population remains unvaccinated and susceptible to the virus. If not treated in time, the infection can lead to severe neurological complications, and death.

Public Health Response and Guidance

The Anantapur Veterinary Hospital is currently managing the crisis by treating dogs brought into the facility and providing mobile treatment for animals on the streets when volunteers provide specific locations. To prevent further spread and protect the public, authorities have issued specific guidelines for residents.

  • Avoid all contact with animals that appear visibly sick.
  • Promptly report cases of sick animals to the veterinary hospital.

Animal activists continue to urge municipal authorities to intervene more aggressively to contain the outbreak, as the number of dogs struck by the viral disease appears to be increasing.

We are providing treatment to dogs brought to the hospital. We are also treating those on the streets when volunteers approach us with their location,

Dr. Suresh, Assistant Director, Anantapur Veterinary Hospital
