Prevalence of Insomnia and Current Treatment challenges
Approximately one in three individuals experiences difficulty achieving restful sleep, with 10% of adults meeting the diagnostic criteria for insomnia disorder. Existing treatments can be challenging to access, and approved pharmaceutical options carry a risk of dependence.
A recent study examined the potential of cannabis-based medical products as an alternative approach to managing insomnia symptoms.
Study Findings: Improved Sleep and Reduced Anxiety
Researchers analyzed data from 124 insomnia patients undergoing treatment with medical cannabis products over a period of one to 18 months. Patients reported sustained improvements in sleep quality throughout the duration of the treatment period.
Beyond sleep, participants also demonstrated significant reductions in anxiety and depression symptoms, alongside a decrease in reported pain levels. Approximately 9% of patients experienced adverse effects, including fatigue, insomnia, and dry mouth; however, none of these side effects were considered life-threatening.
Expert Commentary and the Need for Further Research
Dr. Simon Erridge, Research Director at Curaleaf Clinic, highlighted the study’s findings, stating that treatment with cannabis-based medicinal products was associated with lasting improvements in subjective sleep quality and anxiety over an 18-month period. These results suggest a potential role for medical cannabis in cases where conventional treatments have proven ineffective.
Erridge also emphasized the value of long-term studies in providing real-world evidence beyond the scope of typical short-term trials. The observation of potential tolerance over time underscores the importance of ongoing patient monitoring and individualized treatment plans.
while the study indicates promising results, researchers acknowledge the necessity of randomized controlled trials to definitively establish the safety and long-term efficacy of cannabis-based medical products for insomnia.
