CANNES, France (AP) — The ‍Cannes Film Festival approached its conclusion Friday, with ​the Dardenne ​brothers in contention‍ for a perhaps historic third Palme d’Or. The final day of competition also spotlighted the ⁤rising career of actor Josh O’Connor.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s film, ‍”young Mothers,”‌ follows five teenage girls navigating early motherhood. ⁤Thier lives intersect at‌ a maternal house,which the belgian filmmakers,previously honored at Cannes for “Rosetta” (1999) and “The Child” (2005),depict as a central point for these young mothers‍ to rebuild their lives.

A win Saturday evening ⁤would make the⁤ Dardenne brothers‍ the first directors to achieve three Palme d’Or awards.

Remembering Emilie Dequenne

Following⁤ the screening‌ of‍ “Young Mothers,” the directors paid tribute to Emilie⁤ Dequenne, who died of‌ cancer in March at age​ 43. The Dardennes had cast Dequenne ⁣in “Rosetta,” a role that earned her the award for best actress. Luc Dardenne, speaking to a full audience, described Dequenne as ⁢”a very lively someone.” His brother added, “Emilie loved life, so long⁣ live ​life.”

Kelly Reichardt’s “The Mastermind” ‌Closes Competition

The final film screened in competition Friday evening ⁢was “The Mastermind,” by american director Kelly Reichardt. The film stars ‍Josh ‌O’Connor, 35, as a man who attempts to steal paintings from a ⁤small-town museum in the United States in 1970, during the Vietnam⁢ War era.

O’Connor, known for his portrayal of Prince ‍Charles in “the Crown”​ and ⁢his⁣ role in “Challengers” alongside Zendaya, also appears in “The History of Sound,” another film competing for the Palme d’Or.

Jury Deliberations‍ Underway

Following ​the final⁤ screenings,the jury,led by French actress Juliette Binoche,began deliberations Saturday to select ⁣the winner of the ‌Palme d’Or from among the 22 films‌ in competition.Sean Baker’s “Anora” won the Palme d’Or in 2024.

Several films have emerged as favorites, including “A Simple Accident” by Iranian ⁤director Jafar Panahi, “Two Prosecutors” by Ukrainian director ​Sergei Loznitsa,‌ and ⁤”Sentimental Value” by Norwegian director Joachim Trier.

Additional awards, including best director, best actor, and best actress, will be ⁤presented during the closing ceremony, scheduled to begin at 6:40 p.m.
