On April 9, 2026, Artistic Director Thierry Frémaux and President Iris Knobloch unveiled the official selection for the 79th Cannes Film Festival. The announced lineup is characterized by a heavy emphasis on auteur cinema and a distinctly international focus, marking a significant shift away from the presence of major U.S. Studio blockbusters.

The Competition section of the festival reflects a strong preference for European and Asian cinema, with 65% of the selected films hailing from France, Japan and Spain. Industry reports indicate that the edition will be light on U.S. Studio presence, with no studio blockbusters included in the official selection.

U.S. Representation and Ira Sachs

The sole U.S. Film selected for the Competition is The Man I Love, directed by veteran American indie filmmaker Ira Sachs. Set in 1980s New York, the film is described as a musical fantasia of a city under duress.

During the announcement on April 9, 2026, Thierry Frémaux stated that the narrative deals with the AIDS crisis. The screenplay was written by Sachs in collaboration with Mauricio Zacharias.

The film features a high-profile cast including:

  • Rami Malek
  • Rebecca Hall
  • Tom Sturridge
  • Luther Ford
  • Ebon Moss-Bachrach

Returning Auteurs and International Features

The 79th edition features several cinema heavyweights and previous Palme d’Or winners, including Hirokazu Kore-eda, Cristian Mungiu, and Pedro Almodóvar.

Two-time Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi will debut Parallel Tales, a feature he filmed in Paris in 2025. This project marks Farhadi’s first feature film since A Hero, which earned the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2021, and his second French-language production following The Past.

The cast of Parallel Tales includes a stellar group of French actors: Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Virginie Efira, Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, and Adam Bessa.

Spotlight on Gentle Monster

Also selected for the Competition program is Gentle Monster, the latest work from Marie Kreutzer, the director of Corsage. The film is described as a drama exploring themes of trust and deception, love and violence.

The narrative centers on two women. Léa Seydoux stars as Lucy, a renowned pianist who sacrifices her professional career to support her husband after he suffers a burnout, leading the family to move to the countryside.

The second lead is Elsa, portrayed by Jella Haase, a special police investigator who must balance the demands of her career with the care of her father, who is living with dementia. Catherine Deneuve also appears in the film, marking a double duty for the actress at this year’s festival as she also appears in Farhadi’s Parallel Tales.

The official selection also includes the Un Certain Regard sidebar, continuing the festival’s tradition of showcasing diverse and innovative cinematic voices alongside the main Competition entries.
