Canoe Surfing Wipeout: Hawaii Family Hospitalized (Video)
# Family Canoe Surfing Trip Turns Dramatic with Wipeout and Injuries – But Spirits Remain High
A family canoe surfing session off the coast of Hawaii took a wild turn recently, resulting in injuries but, remarkably, unwavering enthusiasm for getting back out on the water. Radio host, wellness influencer, and mother Brandi-Chanel Machado shared the harrowing - and hilarious – experience on Instagram, detailing a wipeout that sent her family tumbling in the shorebreak.
## Near Disaster in hawaiian Waters
“Just went canoe surfing with my ohana,” Machado narrated in her post. “We almost died.” The incident involved Machado, her sister, her brother, sister-in-law, and her 60-year-old mother, all packed into a canoe tackling waves. The crew successfully rode a wave all the way to shore, but thatS where things went south. The canoe dug a rail, turned sideways, and was ultimately flipped by the powerful shorebreak.
The resulting chaos, described as “carnage” by onlookers, left the family battered but, thankfully, not seriously harmed. Machado explained that her family has been canoe surfing for generations, acknowledging the inherent risks involved. “Anyone who takes a canoe into surf knows there’s a high chance for wipeouts,” she wrote. “All in all, some hard falls and even harder laughs (now that we certainly know everyone is alive).”
## Injuries sustained, But Spirits Unbroken
Despite the dramatic wipeout, the Machado family’s resilience shone through. The 60-year-old mother bore the brunt of the impact, suffering three broken ribs, a torn meniscus, and requiring a neck brace during her hospital stay. Remarkably, she’s already planning her return. “She said as soon as she gets a new canoe, she’s taking it out,” Machado shared.
Her sister also required medical attention, leaving the hospital in a wheelchair. Though, even she maintained a positive outlook. “My sister said it was the most fun wave ride ever,” Machado recounted.

## A Legacy of Ocean Love
The wipeout didn’t erase the good times the family experienced *before* the incident.Machado emphasized that they had caught some excellent waves further out, away from the treacherous shorebreak. “It wasn’t all battle scars. Me and my family love playing on the ocean. We had some good ones,” she said. This incident highlights the deep connection the Machado family has with the ocean and their willingness to embrace both the thrill and the risk that comes with it.It’s a testament to their decades-long tradition and a reminder that even in the face of adversity, a little bit of stoke can go a long way.
