Canon is shifting its strategic focus to capture a resurgence in the compact camera market, specifically targeting younger generations who find current smartphone capabilities insufficient for their creative needs. The company is expanding its PowerShot lineup and significantly increasing production volumes to meet a growing demand among social media users.

In an integrated report shared with investors in April 2026, Canon outlined a five-year plan that identifies three primary trends driving this market shift. The company noted a return of interest in compact cameras, the growth of video content on social media, and an increasing demand for dedicated imaging hardware among new and younger users.

Canon indicated that while smartphones are ubiquitous, there is a growing need for photo and video capture capabilities that exceed what mobile devices can provide. Specifically, the company observed that the younger generation now views owning a compact digital camera as a fashion statement, which has contributed to the expansion of the market.

The company’s most popular compact model, the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, was originally released in 2019. Canon has now confirmed that the PowerShot line will continue to expand to capitalize on these shifting consumer preferences.

To support this pivot, Canon is aggressively scaling its manufacturing capacity. For 2026, the company intends to increase the production volume of its compact digital cameras by 1.5 times compared to the previous year.

This production increase is being managed through a hybrid manufacturing strategy. Canon is expanding the outsourcing of various parts while maintaining domestic camera assembly at its existing facilities.

The drive back toward compact cameras is partly attributed to the technical limitations of smartphones, particularly regarding zoom capabilities. As users seek to improve the quality and variety of their images to avoid the uniform look of smartphone photography, they are returning to fixed-lens devices.

Industry data from the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) supports this trend. Shipments of fixed-lens cameras increased year-on-year, reaching 2.44 million units in 2023. This growth was particularly pronounced in Europe, China, and other parts of Asia, where shipments surged by 32.6% to reach 1.91 million units.

In the Japanese market, shipments of compact cameras rose by 20%. Tsuyoshi Tokura, Canon’s Executive Vice President, stated that the momentum may continue.

While doubling down on compact devices, Canon is simultaneously maintaining its position in the professional and enthusiast segments. The company has been the leading seller of interchangeable lens cameras for 23 years and continues to strengthen its mirrorless offerings.

As part of this broader ecosystem expansion, Canon plans to introduce between six and eight new lenses for the RF mount by the end of 2026.
