Canonical Crown for the Virgin of the Blood in Gerena

Maria Santísima de la Sangre, a revered 18th-century sculpture from the town of Gerena in Andalusia, was canonically crowned on Saturday, September 12, 2026. The historic pontifical mass was presided over by the Archbishop of Sevilla, José Ángel Saiz Meneses, in the town’s plaza Fernández Velasco, drawing large crowds of local devotees and members of the Hermandad de la Vera-Cruz.

According to reporting from the Archidiócesis de Sevilla and Infovaticana, the centerpiece of the ceremony was a newly crafted crown weighing 3.2 kilograms. Commissioned from Córdoba-based silversmith Manuel Valera, the presea is fashioned from 22-karat gold, surpassing the 18-karat standard typically used for such ecclesiastical pieces.

The crown was forged from more than three kilos of gold donated directly by the brothers, families, and devotees of Gerena. Much of the precious metal came from heirlooms and vintage pieces dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Father Amador Domínguez, a priest native to Gerena and a member of the coronation commission, noted that the generational origin of these donated family items directly influenced the unusually high purity of the gold selected for the project. The finished crown was publicly presented on July 31, 2026, at the iglesia de San Benito Abad, where the hermandad later issued certificates of appreciation to the participating families.

A Devotion Rooted in the Sixteenth Century

According to historical studies cited by ABC, the Hermandad de la Vera-Cruz traces its origins back to the early decades of the 16th century. The modern cofradía is the result of a historical merger between the Vera-Cruz brotherhood and an even older San Benito brotherhood dating to the 14th century.

By the close of the 17th century, the two bodies had united under new rules that required participation in the traditional Jueves Santo processions. Over the centuries, the hermandad weathered significant hardships, including property losses during the French invasion and 19th-century disentailments.

Despite those historical setbacks, the local devotion rebounded strongly throughout the 20th century. Francisco López Domínguez, the hermano mayor of the corporation, explained that securing the canonical coronation had long been a primary aspiration for the membership. The formal petition for the crowning was announced in November 2023 during an Eucaristía at the iglesia de San Benito Abad, coinciding with preparations for the 425th anniversary of the historic hermandad merger.

Solemn Processions and Liturgical Events

The coronation day began with the morning opening of the iglesia de San Benito Abad and a midday Ángelus prayer recited before the image. At 17:00 hours, María Santísima de la Sangre was carried in a procession from her home parish toward the plaza Fernández Velasco, accompanied by the newly crafted gold crown.

Archbishop Saiz Meneses began the pontifical mass at 19:30 hours, featuring musical accompaniment by the Grupo de Cámara SACRA, which included both an orchestra and a choir. Following the conclusion of the liturgical ceremony, the image set out at 22:30 hours on a triumphant return procession through the streets of Gerena, marking the culmination of years of cultural, spiritual, and charitable preparation leading up to the September date.
