The feature is available to all 265 million monthly users across all pricing tiers, including free, education, and non-profit accounts, according to a company announcement and a VentureBeat interview.
The update focuses on the “vibe coding” market, where non-technical users generate functional software through conversational AI. While competitors like Replit and Bolt.new emphasize functional code generation, Canva is prioritizing visual polish and editability for non-developers.
Canva Code 2.0 Technical Features and Performance
The 2.0 version introduces a drag-and-drop editing interface that allows users to modify AI-generated elements without rewriting code. Users can change text, update fonts and colors via a toolbar, and pull images from Canva’s library of 120 million assets. Danny Wu, Canva’s Head of AI Products, told VentureBeat that the tool is specifically designed for non-technical users who want more interactivity in presentations and websites.
Canva reported several performance gains in the new release:
- Average code generation time has decreased by 75 percent.
- The median time from initial prompt to a published site has dropped by 30 percent.
- Active Code users increased by 25 percent following the integration of the tool into the broader Canva editor.
The update also adds more than 50 new interactive templates and allows users to embed coded elements directly into whiteboards or presentation decks. A new HTML import feature enables users to bring in code generated by other AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Lovable, and convert it into an editable Canva design.
Market Position and “Vibe Coding” Competition
Canva’s entry follows a rapid expansion in the AI app builder sector. Market research from Luminix AI published in May 2026 estimates the vibe coding market reached $4.7 billion in 2026 and is projected to grow to $12.3 billion by 2027, a compound annual growth rate of roughly 38 percent.
The competitive landscape includes several high-growth startups. According to the Luminix AI report, Lovable reportedly reached approximately $400 million in annual recurring revenue by early 2026. Replit has seen its valuation triple to $9 billion and is targeting $1 billion in run-rate revenue by the end of 2026. Bolt.new grew its annual recurring revenue from $4 million to $40 million shortly after launch.
Unlike these platforms, which often target developers or technical founders, Canva is positioning its tool as a “pluggable” layer for visual communication. Wu stated that the tool is intended for adding interactive elements, such as calculators or product visualizers, to sales decks and marketing materials.
Product Limitations and AI Infrastructure
Wu clarified that Canva Code is intended for front-end applications and small-to-medium scale interactivity. He noted that the tool is not suitable for websites requiring complex backends or those handling hundreds of thousands of daily visitors.
Regarding technical constraints, Wu mentioned that users cannot currently move elements around the canvas manually and must re-prompt the AI to change the layout.
The tool utilizes a mix of proprietary and third-party models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Canva routes requests to different model families depending on the specific task, though the company does not disclose the exact distribution.
This development follows a series of acquisitions aimed at enhancing Canva’s AI capabilities. In March 2024, Canva acquired the creative software suite Affinity for several hundred million pounds, as reported by Bloomberg. In July 2024, the company acquired Leonardo.ai, a generative AI startup with 19 million users.
User Adoption and Data Governance
Canva stated that users have published more than six million websites using Canva Code over the past year. Wu specified to VentureBeat that this figure includes sites shared via private links or password protection, though he acknowledged that data on active retention and regular traffic for these sites is not currently available.
Pricing for the tool follows a credit-based system. While the feature is available to free users, those on Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers receive more AI credits for higher usage volumes.
