Spencer Carbery Named NHL’s Top Coach, Wins Jack Adams Award

Washington Capitals coach Spencer carbery has been awarded the 2024-25 Jack Adams Award, an honor bestowed upon the NHL coach deemed to have contributed most significantly to his team’s success. The presentation occurred during what Carbery believed to be a routine season-ending interview.
Carbery, 43, was surprised with the award by his wife, Casey, and their children, Hudson and Vivian. The emotional moment was further amplified by the presence of extended family members who traveled from across the U.S. and Canada.

Under Carbery’s leadership, the Capitals achieved a 51-22-9 record, totaling 111 points, and secured first place in the Eastern Conference. He is the fourth coach in Capitals history to win the Jack Adams award,joining Bryan Murray (1983-84),Bruce Boudreau (2007-08),and Barry Trotz (2015-16). carbery is also the first coach to be recognized as coach of the year in the ECHL, AHL, and NHL.
The NHL Broadcasters’ Association selects the Jack Adams Award winner. Carbery received 81 first-place votes out of 103 ballots, accumulating 464 points overall. Scott Arniel of the Winnipeg Jets finished second with 249 points, while Martin St. Louis of the Montreal Canadiens came in third with 66 points.
“Wow, I had no idea,” said Carbery, visibly surprised and moved by the honor.
Despite a prosperous regular season, the Capitals were eliminated in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in five games. The team will look to build on this season’s success and make a deeper playoff run next year, focusing on key player development and strategic adjustments to overcome their postseason challenges. The Washington Capitals aim to leverage this coaching success for future Stanley Cup contention.
