Washington, D.C. – The Washington Capitals announced Sunday that they have loaned center Hendrix Lapierre to their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. The move coincides with veteran forward Lars Eller’s activation from injured reserve.
Lapierre, 22, has struggled to find consistency in his NHL role this season. despite recording eight assists in 27 games, he has yet to score a goal. His five-on-five play has been particularly challenging, with the Capitals controlling just 42.9 percent of expected goals during his minutes.
“He’s a young player that has a shining future in this league, and sometimes it takes a little bit longer to develop and grow into an effective NHL player,” Capitals head coach spencer Carbery said last month.
This isn’t Lapierre’s first stint with the Bears. He was instrumental in Hershey’s back-to-back Calder Cup championships, earning playoff MVP honors last spring. His return to Hershey provides him with an opportunity to regain his confidence and refine his game. The Capitals hope he can use this experience to ultimately become a more impactful player at the NHL level.
Eller’s return brings valuable experience and depth to the Capitals’ lineup. The veteran forward has been sidelined sence December 17 due to illness.
A Necessary Move?
The Capitals’ decision to send Lapierre to Hershey has sparked discussion among fans.”It’s definitely a setback, but Coach Carbery did say something about him needing more time to develop,” said lisa, a Capitals fan. “He did win the playoff MVP for Hershey last year, so he obviously has talent.”
Mark, another Capitals fan, agreed. “True. But eight assists in 27 games isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire. What’s been the issue?”
Lisa explained,”Apparently,he’s been struggling at even strength. The team only controls 42.9 percent of the expected goals when he’s on the ice, which suggests he’s been a bit of a liability defensively.”
With Eller returning from injury, the Capitals need his veteran presence, especially with the playoffs approaching.
“It certainly seems that way,” Lisa said. “They’re bringing Eller back from injury, and he’s a veteran with a lot of experience. They need his steady presence in the lineup.”
Mark summed it up: “So, Lapierre goes down, works on his game, and hopefully comes back stronger?”
Lisa nodded. “Exactly. It’s a chance for him to take on a bigger role in Hershey, regain his confidence, and work on those areas where he needs to improve. It’s a tough situation, but hopefully it’s for the best in the long run.”
Capitals’ Lapierre Headed to Hershey; Fans Weigh In
Liam: Hey, did you hear about the Caps sending lapierre down to Hershey?
Sarah: Wow, really? I know he’s been struggling a bit lately, but I thought he had a decent ceiling.
Liam: Yeah, he hasn’t been lighting the lamp. Eight assists in 27 games isn’t bad, but no goals and some tough numbers at even strength.
Sarah: I remember reading about that. The team just hasn’t controlled the puck well when he’s on the ice. What did the coach say?
Liam: Carbery basically said Lapierre’s a young guy with a shining future, but he needs more time to develop. This is a chance for him to get more ice time and work on his game in Hershey.
Sarah: Makes sense. I guess Eller coming back from injury played a role too. They need that veteran presence, especially with playoffs around the corner.
Liam: Exactly.Eller brings experience and stability. It’s a shame for Lapierre, but maybe a stint in Hershey is just what he needs. Remember, he was a beast for them during thier Calder Cup runs, even won playoff MVP last year.
Sarah: That’s right! Hopefully, this is just a temporary setback for Lapierre. He’s got talent, nobody can deny that. Maybe this will give him a chance to refine his skills and come back even stronger.
