Super Typhoon Capricorn to Bring Strong Winds and Heavy Showers to Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Observatory has announced that it will change the Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 at 6:20 pm today (5th). The gale area associated with Super Typhoon Capricorn is expected to still affect the Pearl River Estuary area tomorrow morning, and the Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 will be maintained at least until 12 noon tomorrow (6th).
As of 5 pm, Super Typhoon Capricorn was located about 340 kilometers south of Hong Kong, with a highest sustained wind speed near the center of 210 kilometers per hour. According to current forecasts, Capricorn will maintain super typhoon intensity and pass about 300 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong early tomorrow morning. As Capricorn gets closer, the wind in Hong Kong will gradually increase tonight and the weather will turn bad.
In the past hour, the highest sustained wind speeds recorded at Ngong Ping, Waglan Island, and Cheung Chau Beach were 69, 65, and 58 kilometers per hour respectively, with the highest gusts exceeding 92, 73, and 72 kilometers per hour respectively.
The strong rainbands associated with Capricorn will gradually affect Hong Kong later today. Tomorrow, there will be strong winds and heavy showers, with very strong waves and swells in the sea. People are advised to stay away from the shore and stop all water activities.
The weather forecast for the Hong Kong area today is to blow strong to strong winds from the east to the northeast, with the winds further strengthening to strong winds later. It will be mainly cloudy with a few squally showers and thunderstorms. The maximum temperature will be about 31°C, with heavy rain at times later. The sea has large waves and swells.
