Car Crash: Brendan Courtney Lucky Escape – Irish Times
Brendan Courtney’s Close Call: Car crashes Into Home, But Gratitude Prevails
Wicklow Town, Ireland – In a dramatic turn of events late Saturday night, broadcaster and fashion designer Brendan Courtney experienced what he calls a “lucky escape” when a car careened through his garden and slammed into the front of his wicklow town home. The incident occurred mere minutes after courtney had been standing in the very spot where the car made impact.
The driver, an 84-year-old woman, miraculously emerged from the wreckage unharmed. Courtney, while heartbroken by the extensive damage too the house he’s spent the last year renovating with his life savings, expressed immense gratitude that both he, his dog, and the driver were safe.
“I could be dead or paralysed, and she could be dead or seriously injured,” Courtney told The Irish Times. “She came very close to hitting a lamp post at the front of my house head-on, and that would have been a very different story. We were both a bit shook. But I am fine, and she is fine.”
In a testament to his compassion, Courtney invited the shaken woman into his home for a cup of tea after the accident. “She was really shaken, and I brought her in and made her a cup of tea. The cops were brilliant, fire brigade, ambulance, everybody came, but she’s fine. She’s okay, bless her,” he recounted.
The incident unfolded around 11:05 pm. “The dog was on the bed, and I was getting ready for bed too,” Courtney explained. “The whole house shook. I thought someone had lashed a brick through the window or maybe that it was a gas explosion.”
The realization of how close he had come to serious harm struck Courtney when he reviewed doorbell camera footage at the request of the Gardaí (Irish police).
Adding an odd twist to the story, this isn’t the first time Courtney has experienced a car colliding with his home. “The odd twist is, my parents’ house was on a corner, and we were known for our wall being crashed into when it was icy. I think that wall was crashed into 14 times.”
Following his Instagram post about the crash, Courtney’s builder, whom he affectionately calls his “superhero,” instantly came to the rescue.
