Finalists Announced
The competition for the prestigious Car of the Year 2026 award has narrowed to seven finalists: the Citroën C5 Aircross, Dacia Bigster, Fiat Grande Panda, Kia EV4, Mercedes-Benz CLA, Renault 4, and Škoda Elroq.
Notably, six of the shortlisted models are fully electric, signaling a continued shift towards electric vehicles in the European automotive market. The Dacia Bigster will offer both petrol and hybrid powertrain options, providing consumers with a broader range of choices.
Renault Continues Success
Renault aims to build on its recent success, having won last year’s award with the Renault 5.The company is presenting an all-electric revival of its iconic 4 model for consideration.
Rigorous Testing Process
The seven finalists were selected from an initial longlist of 35 vehicles by a jury of 59 automotive experts from across Europe. The selection process involved comprehensive testing, including a week-long evaluation known as the Tannis Test, held in northern Denmark.
The Tannis Test subjects vehicles to a variety of driving conditions, from typical roads to a closed-course airfield. A key component is the “Elk Test”-a high-speed swerve designed to simulate avoiding an animal-which rigorously assesses handling, balance, and stability control systems.
Further Evaluation and Winner Declaration
Before the end of the year, the finalists will undergo further evaluations across europe, with each available powertrain variant being thoroughly tested. The ultimate winner will be announced at the Brussels Motor Show on January 9th.
