Investigators traced the fraudulent transfer to an unknown suspect within weeks of receiving the corporate complaint, freezing the majority of the funds before filing charges against the IBAN holder.
Phishing Attack Targeted Employee Severance Funds
The fraud began in August when the company’s email inbox received a fraudulent message designed to look like it came from a former employee. The communication requested a change in bank coordinates for severance pay, known as TFR, featuring authentic text and formatting that tricked the business owner into wiring 5,500 euros. The owner noticed the funds had vanished into an unknown account too late and immediately reported the crime to local authorities. Carabinieri from the Borgo Panigale company and the local barracks launched an investigation that quickly tracked the destination account.
Investigation Recovered Most of the Stolen Money
Within a few weeks, military investigators blocked and recovered 4,760 euros of the stolen funds. Authorities filed charges against the holder of the recipient IBAN and stated that inquiries will continue to determine whether any accomplices helped execute the digital fraud. The successful recovery follows a separate recent case handled by Carabinieri in Castel Maggiore, where an elderly pensioner recovered 50,000 euros lost to a fraudulent SMS message.
Company Expresses Gratitude to Investigators
Following the resolution of the case, the business owner submitted a formal electronic letter of thanks to the barracks in Calderara.
