Cardinal Parolin Voices Alarm Over Gaza and Ukraine, Urges Renewed Focus on peace
Naples, Italy – Cardinal Secretary of State pietro Parolin has issued a stark warning regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing the urgent need for diplomatic solutions and a renewed commitment to peace. Speaking on the sidelines of the 75th Italian National Liturgical Week on Monday, August 26th, the Cardinal addressed journalists’ questions with bluntness and concern.
Responding to inquiries about the recent Israeli bombing of the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, which resulted in at least 20 deaths, including five journalists, Cardinal Parolin described the situation as “absurd.” He highlighted the widespread condemnation of the attack, noting a “unanimous choir” of voices expressing outrage. The Cardinal expressed deep concern over the lack of viable solutions and the increasingly precarious humanitarian conditions within gaza, conditions he said are ”continuously” worsening.
Turning to Ukraine, Cardinal Parolin stressed the critical role of political will in achieving a lasting peace. While acknowledging the existence of numerous theoretical pathways to resolution, he emphasized that “we must want to put them into practice,” and that a “disposition of the Spirit” is also essential. He underscored the importance of hope, notably in light of Pope Francis’s call for a Jubilee year focused on peace and reconciliation.
“It takes hope for the whole world,” Cardinal Parolin stated, acknowledging the current lack of positive indicators on the international stage. He recognized the difficulties in initiating peace processes amidst ongoing conflicts, but firmly asserted the necessity of perseverance. “One must not resign and continue to work for peace and reconciliation,” he urged. The Jubilee, he hopes, will serve as “a moment of recovery of hope,” even “hope against all hope,” given the current challenges.
The Cardinal’s remarks serve as a powerful call to action for the international community to prioritize diplomatic efforts and address the root causes of these conflicts, offering a message of resilience and the enduring importance of seeking peaceful resolutions.
