Karson Sharar’s transition to the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals is the result of a five-year developmental process at the University of Iowa, where the linebacker utilized a period of limited playing time to prepare for a professional career.
Sharar, a 6-foot-2, 231-pound linebacker, was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft. He was taken with the 183rd overall pick, marking the team’s sixth selection in the draft.
Collegiate Development and Breakout
The path to the professional level was not immediate for Sharar during his tenure with the Hawkeyes. For the first three seasons of his college career, his involvement in games was minimal, appearing in no more than six games total during that period.

This period of waiting preceded a significant breakout during his senior campaign. In his final year at Iowa, Sharar became a consistent presence on the field, playing in 13 games and recording 83 total tackles and four sacks.
Speaking on the Arizona Sports program Bickley & Marotta on May 9, 2026, Sharar credited the environment at the University of Iowa for his readiness for the NFL.
I think that’s just the difference in the culture there, Iowa just treats (development) different and treats it more professional and I think they really prepare you as a player, make you develop and get you ready for the next level.

Athletic Background and Versatility
Before focusing on the linebacker position, Sharar was a multi-sport athlete in Iowa Falls. He played high school basketball and served as a running back for Iowa Fall-Alden High School.

As a running back, Sharar demonstrated significant offensive production, recording multiple seasons with more than 1,000 rushing yards. While he acknowledged that scoring touchdowns was a highlight of his high school experience, he noted that his time on the offensive side of the ball helped him refine the skills he now uses as a professional defender.
Sharar’s collegiate options also extended beyond the University of Iowa, as he had previously received an offer to play for Drake University before committing to the Hawkeyes.
