Son Jun-ho, a player for Suwon FC, has been handed a permanent ban by the Chinese Football Association, prohibiting him from engaging in any soccer-related activities.
The Chinese Football Association announced 61 disciplinary measures on September 10, following an investigation into match-fixing and illegal gambling incidents in professional leagues. Son Jun-ho was among those affected by the decision.
Son Jun-ho was detained in May last year while playing for Shandong Taishan in the Chinese Super League. He was investigated by the Chaoyang Public Security Bureau of Liaoning Province and charged with bribery of non-state agents. Although he denied any wrongdoing, the situation was not resolved quickly. After spending 10 months in prison, he was released and returned to Korea in March.
Despite efforts to revive his career, including a potential transfer to Jeonbuk Hyundai, concerns about his past led to the deal falling through. He eventually joined Suwon FC, but the risk associated with his past actions has continued to follow him.
The Korea Football Association (KFA) allowed Son Jun-ho to register as a player in April, and he had been gradually recovering his skills at Suwon FC. However, the Chinese Football Association’s decision may impact his future career as a player, depending on the KFA’s response.
Coach Hong Myung-bo, who recently announced the list of players for the national team, expressed concerns about Son Jun-ho’s selection, citing the risk associated with his past detention in China. Son Jun-ho has since refused to give interviews, leaving his future uncertain.
