Four men, including Club Sport Cartaginés football player Carlos Barahona and two of his cousins, were detained on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during a series of early morning raids in Cartago linked to illegal high-interest loans known as gota a gota
and money laundering, according to CR Hoy. The operation snared four specific individuals identified by authorities. Alongside 24-year-old Carlos Barahona, the Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the arrests of two of his cousins—identified by the surnames Artavia and Aguilar—and a fourth man with the surname Duarte, as reported by lateja.cr. Investigators state that Artavia and Aguilar were apprehended directly inside the footballer’s residence.
Extorsion Tactics and the December 2025 Loan Origin
According to the Public Ministry, the criminal case originated from an informal loan granted in December 2025. Following months of mounting financial pressure and intimidation, the primary victim filed a formal complaint with the OIJ, prompting the months-long surveillance that culminated in Wednesday’s raids.

The investigative findings indicate a coordinated collection method among the suspects. CR Hoy and observador.cr both noted that the group allegedly relied on firearms and continuous harassment—including showing up unannounced at the homes of borrowers, their relatives, and acquaintances—to compel compliance. The suspects now face formal charges encompassing debt-collection extortion and money laundering.

Following the arrests, the four men were scheduled for transfer to the Heredia Courts of Justice to render their initial declarations before the Heredia Adjunct Prosecutor’s Office. From there, they await a penal court hearing where a judge will determine precautionary measures.
Club Sport Cartaginés issued a public statement addressing the arrest of their player, affirming that the organization will monitor the legal proceedings closely and act in accordance with Costa Rican law, as reported by observador.cr. The club refrained from announcing immediate internal disciplinary measures against Barahona, noting that out of respect for the individuals involved and the judicial authorities, no further statements would be provided at this stage.
