Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares steps Down, Citing Differences with Board
Detroit, MI – In a surprise move, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares has resigned effective instantly, the company announced Sunday. the decision comes after weeks of reported disagreements between tavares adn the board of directors, led by Chairman John Elkann.
Tavares,who spearheaded the 2021 merger of Groupe PSA and Fiat Chrysler to create Stellantis,will be replaced by a new interim executive committee headed by Elkann.The search for a permanent CEO is underway and expected to conclude in the first half of 2025.
“The success of Stellantis since its creation has been based on perfect alignment between reference shareholders, the Board of Directors, and the CEO,” said Henri de Castries, senior independent director at Stellantis. ”However, in recent weeks, differing viewpoints have emerged, leading to today’s decision by the Board of Directors and the CEO.”
Elkann expressed gratitude for Tavares’s contributions, highlighting his role in the creation of Stellantis and his leadership in transforming PSA and Opel. “I look forward to working with the new interim Executive Committee, supported by all Stellantis colleagues, as we complete the process of appointing a new CEO,” Elkann stated. “Together, we will ensure the continued deployment of the company’s strategy for the long-term benefit of Stellantis and all its shareholders.”
The declaration follows reports in October that stellantis had begun searching for Tavares’s successor, despite his contract extending until 2026. pressure on Tavares had been mounting due to the company’s struggles in key markets like the United states, a major source of revenue for Stellantis alongside Europe.
Elkann had reportedly expressed growing dissatisfaction with Stellantis’s performance in North America, where sales of brands like Jeep and Dodge have slowed, and several executives have departed.
