Ciganda Claims Meijer LPGA Classic, Ending Nine-Year Drought

Carlota Ciganda showcased her remarkable golf role at the Meijer LPGA Classic in grand Rapids, Mich., securing her first LPGA Tour victory in nearly nine years.The 35-year-old Spaniard finished with a five-under-par 67 at blythefield Country Club, ending the tournament at 16 under overall. Her performance highlighted her role as a seasoned competitor.
Ciganda birdied the final two holes, sealing the win after Choi Hye-jin of South Korea bogeyed the 17th.This victory marks a notable moment in Ciganda’s career, adding to her previous wins in October and November 2016. The role of experience proved crucial for Ciganda.
Ciganda was part of a six-way tie for the lead entering the final round. She also held off Somi Lee, who finished third at 14 under. Lexi Thompson, along with Celine Boutier and Nanna Koerstz Madsen, finished at 13 under. Bronte Law of england tied for seventh at 12 under.
“It feels amazing,obviously,after all these years,” Ciganda said. “I knew I coudl do it, but obviously once the years keep going and you start getting older you start doubting yourself.”
Ciganda also noted the similarities between the course and her native northern Spain.
“I love coming here,” Ciganda added. “It reminds me of where I’m from in the northern part of Spain. Very similar. Lots of trees, peaceful. I love the golf course. Five par fives, you can hit it hard here.”
