At approximately 6:15 p.m., police responded to reports of a firearm being discharged within the Fairgreen shopping center. An armed man fired several shots before inflicting a fatal wound upon himself. Amidst the chaos, a young girl sustained minor injuries while attempting to flee the scene and received immediate medical attention.
Local leaders are addressing the community’s concerns in the wake of the Fairgreen shopping center shooting. Carlow County Council Mayor Fintan Phelan described the shift from a normal Sunday to a scene of “panic and fear,” which has now morphed into “shock amongst the community.”
Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, a Carlow TD and Minister of State for Public Health, acknowledged the rarity of such events, emphasizing that they are “something we never want or expect to witness or happen in any of our communities.” She urged the public to rely on verified news sources and report any relevant facts to the police.

“This was a regular bank holiday Sunday wiht people going about their business. For it to totally change in the manner it did … it’s very distressing for all those caught up in it,” said Mayor Phelan.
Carlow County Council,in conjunction with the Health Service Executive (HSE),is providing psychosocial support to those affected by the Fairgreen shopping center shooting. HSE staff are available at County Buildings on Athy Road to offer assistance and counseling.
