El Boalo: A Family Home and the Legacy of Carmen Martín Gaite
A Welcoming home, Even in Private Moments
The family home, El Boalo, was known for its open-door policy, a characteristic stemming from its owner, Anita. Patricia Caprile recalls that visitors frequently arrived, sometimes at inconvenient times, yet Anita consistently welcomed them. “She always had the gate door open and, of course, ther were times when they showed up at odd hours, like at lunchtime. Even though it was her house and her privacy, Anita never knew how to say no,” Caprile stated. This lead to a system of occasional, scheduled visits to manage the flow of people wanting to experience the home.
initially, Anita showed guests the ground floor where she lived, while Caprile was tasked with guiding visitors thru the tower, a space dedicated to the belongings of Carmiña. notably,Carmiña herself never saw this space; it was created by Anita as a memorial after Carmiña’s death.
Carmen Martín Gaite’s Complex Relationship with El Boalo
While El Boalo held significance as the family home and was frequently visited by writer Carmen Martín Gaite, she harbored a strong preference for urban life and her apartment on Doctor Esquerdo Street in Madrid. Following the deaths of her parents and daughter, Marta Ferlosio Martin, Martín Gaite deliberately avoided returning to El Boalo for an extended period.
This suggests a complex emotional connection to the family home – a place of familial ties and memories, yet one that also represented a life she ultimately chose to leave behind in favor of the vibrancy and anonymity of the city.
