Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Sunday that Qatar has committed to “making strategic investments in Canadian projects of national interest.”
These investments will boost industries in clean energy, healthcare, artificial intelligence, and defence,as well as “create jobs in Canada.”
Carney spoke of “a new chapter” in the Canada-Qatar bilateral relationship. He added that the two countries will also strengthen cultural ties, including an increase in flights between the two countries to stimulate tourism and the economy.
“When people from different countries get to know each other’s culture and ideas better, everyone benefits. Everyone trusts each other more. […] Everyone wants to do more things with each other, everyone wants to build together.”
The Prime Minister also stated that both countries aim to “conclude negotiations on a new Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement [FIPA] by summer.”
Canada will establish a Canadian Defence Attaché office in Doha to increase the frequency and scope of bilateral defense discussions.
