Carol “Ann” Kahler Sherwood, an 83-year-old resident of Washington City, Utah, passed away on September 18, 2026, leaving behind a diverse legacy spanning nursing, paleontology, and active community involvement according to obituary records. Born in Salt Lake City on June 16, 1943, to Leroy and Carol Seegmiller Young, Sherwood spent her early years across Nevada before moving to Fairbanks, Alaska. At Lathrop High School, she served as one of the school’s two majorettes during her 1961 senior year, where she met her future husband, Bernie Sherwood, whom she married the following year.
A Life Across Western States and Active Pursuits
Following their time in Alaska, the growing family relocated in 1969 to Torrance, California. There, Sherwood embraced an active coastal lifestyle that included biking and rollerblading along the Strand, playing guitar, writing original songs, and working summer shifts as a lifeguard at Monsoon Lagoon in Redondo Beach. Later in life, she returned to Utah to live in Cedar City with her parents. She earned her certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant and spent years providing professional care to others, alongside serving as a dedicated caregiver to her parents during their final years.
Fossil Preparation and Community Involvement in Washington City
After retiring, Sherwood moved to Washington City, Utah, and began volunteering at the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm. She worked as a fossil technician and preparator, cleaning, restoring, and building custom mounts to stabilize prehistoric specimens. Affectionately known as “Dinosaur Annie,” her dedication to the field extended to serving as Vice President of the Utah Friends of Paleontology. Her family and friends remember her as a creative individual who loved Jesus, reading, sports, stickers, emojis, Bitmojis, and artificial flowers whose lasting blooms were a constant source of beauty.
Funeral Services and Surviving Family Members
Sherwood is survived by her husband, Bernie Sherwood, and her four children: Jina Sherwood of Medford, Oregon; Laurie Sherwood Johnson and husband Mark of Gilbert, Arizona; Douglas Sherwood and partner Brian of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Amber Sherwood Klumker and husband Jonathan of Gig Harbor, Washington. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and siblings Ray Kahler and wife Darcy of Cedar City, Bill Kahler of Beaver, and sister Penny Kahler Christensen. She was preceded in death by her birth father, LeRoy George Young in 2004; her mother, Carol Seegmiller in 2004; her adoptive father, Millard Howe Kahler in 2014; and her brothers Danny Wilson Kahler in 1952 and Lee Dee Kahler in 2017. Funeral services are scheduled for October 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM at McArthur Funeral Home in St. George, Utah, followed by burial at the Cedar City Cemetery.
