Bapu Withdraws from Malawi Netball Presidency Race Amid Constitutional Dispute

Netball in Malawi is facing a period of settled leadership, albeit one marked by controversy, as Cecilia Bapu has withdrawn her candidacy for the presidency of the Netball Association of Malawi (NAM). The decision comes after a ruling by the electoral committee deemed her ineligible to run, citing a constitutional clause barring individuals who have served two consecutive terms in one office from contesting for any position within the association.
Constitutional Challenge and Bapu’s Initial Response
The committee’s interpretation of the NAM constitution sparked immediate debate. Bapu initially contested the ruling, arguing the two-term limit applied only to the same position, having previously served two consecutive terms as general secretary. She stated she had sought legal counsel who initially confirmed her eligibility to run for president, a different office. Receiving 16 nominations from affiliates – significantly more then the incumbent, President Gubuduza’s nine – underscored considerable grassroots support for her candidacy.
However, in a recent interview, Bapu conceded to the committee’s decision. “Despite disagreeing with the electoral committee’s decision, I have decided to step aside for the love of the game and to avoid unnecessary tension,” she explained. She expressed gratitude to the affiliates who nominated her, highlighting their endorsement as a testament to her vision for the sport.
A Vision for Malawi Netball
Bapu’s ambition centered on revitalizing the Malawi Queens, the national netball team, and restoring their prominence on the African and global stage. She believes her leadership could return the team to its “glory days.” Her supporters point to her previous successes as general secretary, where she is credited with improving administrative systems, expanding youth participation, and securing crucial sponsorships.
Despite stepping aside, Bapu affirmed her commitment to Malawi netball. “This is not the end for me. I will return to serve Malawi Netball again because my mission has always been to serve the sport and the nation, not personal interests.”
Gubuduza to Retain Presidency Unopposed
With Bapu’s withdrawal, Gubuduza will retain the NAM presidency uncontested at the upcoming elective general meeting on August 23 in Lilongwe. This outcome arrives at a critical juncture for Malawian netball, a sport grappling with inconsistent national team performances and pressing needs for improved player welfare, increased sponsorship, and enhanced grassroots development.
Balancing Rules and Democratic Choice
The situation highlights a broader tension within sports management: the balance between strict constitutional interpretation and the democratic will of affiliates. While some argue the committee’s ruling was a necessary enforcement of the rules to ensure fairness, others view it as a lost opportunity for possibly transformative leadership.
The focus now shifts to Gubuduza and the policies he will pursue during his next term. Key priorities include securing increased funding for the Malawi Queens, addressing player allowances, improving coaching programs, and investing in netball infrastructure across both urban and rural areas.
Ultimately, the future success of Malawi netball hinges on unity within its administration. Bapu’s pledge to return to the sport suggests the debate over leadership and direction is far from settled, and that her influence will continue to be felt as Malawi netball strives for on-court success.
