Long-standing BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood marked the end of an era with her final forecast on the program on April 1, 2026. The departure concludes a significant tenure on the morning show, prompting tributes from colleagues and viewers alike as the broadcaster prepared to leave the BBC programme.

Earlier in the year, Kirkwood announced her departure, setting the stage for a series of farewells leading up to her final appearance. The broadcast team and audience utilized the final week to honor her contribution to the show, blending professional accolades with personal touches that reflected her on-air persona.

Special Tribute at RHS Wisley

During one of her last broadcasts, Kirkwood received a heartfelt parting gift while delivering the forecast from RHS Wisley. According to reports from the Bristol Post, the tribute occurred during a segment that left fans of the breakfast show watching the touching scene.

Special Tribute at RHS Wisley

On the Monday installment of the show, dated March 30, 2026, Kirkwood was taken by surprise when Tim Upson, the RHS director of gardens and horticulture, made an unexpected announcement. Upson disclosed that the official Met Office weather station at the location would be rechristened the Carol Kirkwood Weather Site.

As Tim handed over a commemorative plaque, the presenter exclaimed regarding the honor.

Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness! How wonderful is that?

She responded to the gesture by joking that she intended to steal the commemorative sign and display it at home. Kirkwood remarked on the significance of the plaque, noting, You know when you see the blue plaques? She added that she was going to have to put this in the outside of my house!

Colleague Tributes and Training Memories

Fellow weather presenters and co-hosts also shared their appreciation for Kirkwood’s work. Sarah Keith-Lucas, a BBC Weather colleague, recounted a specific memory from when Kirkwood was training her to present the weather when she first started.

Keith-Lucas highlighted Kirkwood’s ability to talk fluently and captivate the audience regardless of the topic. She described a training exercise where Kirkwood picked up the nearest object she could find, which happened to be a very plain, black, plastic kettle, and talked for exactly two-and-a-half minutes on the subject of said kettle.

Keith-Lucas noted she was impressed watching Kirkwood talk so enthusiastically and confidently about the minor details of the kettle without a hitch or a hesitation. The talk was rounded off at exactly two and a half minutes, a typical length of a weather forecast. Keith-Lucas admitted her own turn was not so successful, but noted the lesson taught her an invaluable skill as a weather presenter.

You might not know exactly what words are going to come out of your mouth, but if you present with confidence and enthusiasm and you know your subject well, you will engage the audience brilliantly.

The Perfect Cup of Carol Kirkwood Tea

Behind the scenes, the production team shared insights into Kirkwood’s personal preferences. Elizabeth Rizzini of BBC Weather contributed a guide published at 08:11 BST on the day of the final forecast, detailing how to prepare the presenter’s preferred beverage.

Rizzini noted that early shift workers are often fuelled by some kind of substance other than utter devotion to their job and obedience to the 03:00 alarm, stating that Kirkwood is powered by tea. The guide outlined the specific requirements for the perfect cup.

The recipe calls for milk, a mug, a teabag, hot water, and significantly more milk. The instructions specify to heat the mug, or it will be stone cold. The tea bag is to be put in, followed by 5cm of hot water. The bag is then allowed to briefly sniff hot water before being removed after a nano-second and discarded.

Half a litre of milk is poured in until the mug is full. The beverage is to be served immediately with a spring of sunshine, resulting in an approximate colour of baby formula white. Rizzini concluded the tribute by noting that after receiving a hug, smile, and effusive thanks, the team could get on with making more normal tea for the rest of the team.

An image accompanying the guide showed five large plastic milk bottles lined up on a refrigerator shelf, all identical with green labels, neatly arranged against the metallic back panel inside the fridge. The caption noted the team was checking there were sufficient supplies in for Carol’s cuppas.

Viewer and Host Reactions

The announcement of Kirkwood’s departure elicited strong reactions from the audience. Fans of the breakfast show watching the touching scene admitted it would be really sad to bid farewell to Carol. One viewer revealed they became tearful while another posted a crying emoji on social media.

Internal reactions were also documented regarding the team dynamic. Reports indicated that Wednesday was going to be a sad day for all Breakfast team and crew. Specifically, Jon Kay and Sally Nugent were noted as especially will be really sad regarding the departure.

The coverage of the final forecast included invitations for the public to share farewell messages or favourite memories of Kirkwood’s time at the BBC. The segment closed with a message from the weather team stating, We love you Carol!
