Title: A Journey Through Time: Carouge‘s Historic School Photos on Display
In the heart of Carouge, the local museum is currently hosting an exhibition that’s a blast from the past. ‘Photos de classe: pose ou grimace?’ presents over a hundred historical school photographs, spanning 115 years of Sarde history. The exhibition, open until April 27, is a nostalgic trip down memory lane for many, and a fascinating glimpse into the past for others.
A Rite of Passage
The school photo, a rite of passage for generations, is the star of this exhibition. Benoît Boretti, the museum’s conservator and one of the exhibition’s curators, explains, "It’s a social ritual that brings people together. It’s an object of memory that everyone can relate to, no matter their generation."
The museum aims to engage the local community with this exhibit, showcasing their rich historical heritage. The photos on display are primarily from the École des Pervenches and École Jacques-Dalphin, with the year and teacher’s name noted where possible.
From Black and White to Color
The oldest photograph dates back to 1876, while the newest is from 1991. These images are more than just snapshots; they’re a reflection of societal evolution. Boretti points out the changes and constants throughout the years: "You see the number of students, their poses, their clothing, and the teacher’s role evolving. But what remains constant is the seriousness of these photos. They’re a testament to the importance of this moment."
The school photo emerged in the mid-19th century, with long poses and serious faces. Institutions used them for promotion. Then, in the 1960s, color photos brought a touch of levity, but the solemnity persisted.
A Well-Crafted Exhibition
The exhibition is organized chronologically, with each room dedicated to a specific period. Each room offers insights into the classroom atmosphere, rules, student numbers, and other historical details.
Boretti shares, "The challenge was to find the right display method. We wanted to honor these historical objects but keep them true to their original form – not in fancy frames, but like they’d be in a family album."
Among the thousand faces on display, you might spot some local celebrities. But the museum leaves it to visitors to make that discovery.
An Interactive Experience
The museum has gone the extra mile to make this exhibition interactive and engaging. In one room, an old classroom has been reconstructed, with visitors invited to spot anachronistic objects hidden within. There are also workshops planned, like a storytelling session for seniors on March 20 and 27, which will be turned into a podcast for future generations.
Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to explore Carouge’s rich history. The exhibition is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 2 PM to 6 PM, with a vernissage this Saturday at 11 AM. Guided tours are available on February 27 and April 24 at 6 PM, and a conference, ‘À l’école à Carouge au fil du temps,’ is scheduled for March 8 at 2:30 PM.
