Pioneering Rail Tours and a Passion for Transport
Mr. Walsh’s dedication extended beyond simply documenting railway history; he actively promoted it through innovative rail tours. Táilte Tours, a rail heritage group, paid tribute to his important contributions.
“Ian ran five rail tours of his own over the course of the mid to late 2000s and was very much a pioneer in ‘outside the box’ tours in Ireland, starting them from locations such as Waterford and Limerick, in an era when tours were generally based in Dublin or Belfast,” Táilte Tours stated. He generously shared his expertise with the group, helping them to create unique and memorable experiences for rail enthusiasts.
The group highlighted his willingness to go “far beyond the extra mile,” specifically mentioning his role in facilitating “surprise” rare track moves on their Cork-based railtours. His deep understanding of the Iarnród Éireann system and its personnel was invaluable.
Furthermore, Mr. Walsh’s interest extended to Bus Éireann, where he meticulously documented the final runs of several rural routes in the southeast, forging connections with bus drivers in the Cork and Waterford areas. His commitment to preserving all aspects of Ireland’s transport heritage will be deeply missed.
