A Bloomington man received a prison sentence for his involvement in the violent robbery of a 68-year-old Mahtomedi resident after the victim left a casino with over $38,000 in winnings. Shawn Eric Lewis Jr., 38, was sentenced to 58 months in prison after pleading guilty to aiding and abetting first-degree aggravated robbery. The incident occurred in December 2023 when the victim returned home from Treasure Island Resort & Casino.
According to court testimony, Lewis jr. and another man ambushed the victim outside his residence on Griffin Court. The victim stated that he was violently attacked, fearing for his life. During the assault, the victim’s girlfriend and her niece came outside, and one of the assailants threatened to kill them if they did not go back inside.

Washington County District judge Siv Mjanger handed down the sentence, which was the result of a plea agreement. Lewis Jr.’s attorney requested a downward departure, citing his client’s struggle with fentanyl addiction. However, Mjanger denied the request, acknowledging Lewis Jr.’s addiction but emphasizing that it did not excuse the violent nature of the crime.
“An intentional, very, very violent act that could have ended his life. So even though I recognize your addiction, I acknowledge it, and I acknowledge your desire to change your life. It is an explanation, but it’s not an excuse for the behavior,” Judge Mjanger said.
